Bayton - TCO considerations

What does Android kiosk software actually cost?

And how much an organisation saves by generating free, fully-featured Bayton apps instead of buying them, upgrading for them, or building them.

Locking an Android device into a branded, multi-app kiosk - or wrapping a web service as a clean, managed app - is something almost every managed estate needs, for reception screens, retail, signage, frontline tools and dedicated devices. Most organisations pay for that capability one way or another. Bayton offers two free, open-source app generators - a kiosk launcher and a web app builder - that together cover most of it. This report sets out the going rate across the market in 2026, and what the Bayton app generators remove from the bill.

Calculate what you saved

Estimate the kiosk-software cost you avoid over a deployment by generating your Bayton apps for free.

3 years

Where these rates come from: each is a benchmark drawn from the comparison below. £1.20/device/mo is a standalone kiosk app (section 1); £1.60 is kiosk on a mainstream managed estate, where buying an app and a forced kiosk-tier upgrade converge (sections 1-2); £4.00 is a premium kiosk platform (section 1). Pick the one closest to what you'd otherwise buy - the same three rates drive the totals table at the end.

£0

Prefer to own it outright? Building an equivalent kiosk launcher in-house is a one-off of roughly £6,000-£12,000 - and the generator hands you the full source for £0, so you keep that ownership without the build.

Figures are public list prices observed June 2026 and converted to GBP at £1 ≈ $1.27. They are planning estimates, not quotes; vendor pricing changes - see references.

What you’re really saving

A managed Android estate still needs a management platform (an EMM/MDM) to enrol devices, push apps, and lock them down - the generators don’t replace that. What they replace is the paid app itself: the launcher that turns a device into a branded, multi-app kiosk, or the wrapper that turns a web service into a managed app. Organisations pay for that in one of three ways, and the Bayton app generators remove whichever one applies to you:

These are alternatives, not extras - you’d only ever be doing one of them.

1. Versus buying a standalone kiosk app

Dedicated kiosk apps range from inexpensive one-off licences to recurring per-device subscriptions. The cheapest are simple locked browsers; the most expensive are full platforms that bundle remote management, analytics and content control - far more than a kiosk app, and priced to match.

ProductPricingPer device / month*
Fully Kiosk (PLUS)~£8 one-time~£0.15
Kiosk Browser (Proconsultant)£8 one-time (remote mgmt extra)~£0.15
GoKiosk (Gold)~£16 / device / year~£1.33
SureLock (42Gears)~£2.35 / device / month~£2.35
Codeproof (Standard)~£19 / device / year (kiosk capped at 5 apps)~£1.58
BlueFletch Launcher~£46 / device / year (full enterprise launcher)~£3.85
SiteKiosk Classic~£85 one-time + ~£25 / year~£4
SiteKiosk Online platform~£203 / device / year~£18
KioCloud platform~£58 / yr + ~£36 client licence~£5+

*One-time licences amortised over a typical 3-year deployment. Items tagged platform include remote management, monitoring and content tools well beyond a kiosk app, so they sit above any like-for-like comparison.

Typical saving: £1.20-£1.60 per device per month, rising to around £4 where the alternative was a premium kiosk platform - the £1.20, £1.60 and £4.00 benchmark rates used in the calculator and the totals table.

2. Versus upgrading your management tier

Many management platforms include basic kiosk in their entry tier - there’s no saving against those, this isn’t claimed here. But several gate a usable kiosk (multi-app, custom launcher, branding) behind a paid upgrade or add-on. Where that’s the case, the generators let you stay on the lower tier:

PlatformTo get a real kiosk you must…Added / device / month
Miradoremove from Free to Premium (free tier has no kiosk)~£2.15
Codeproofmove from Standard to Enterprise (for multi-app)+£1.58
Appaloosamove from Essential to Business+£1.28
Mambomove from Basic to Advanced (Advanced Kiosk)+£1.18
Appliverymove from Starter to Advanced (for multi-app / native launcher)+£0.85
Hexnodemove from Pro to Enterprise (for advanced / multi-app kiosk)+£0.80
AirDroid Businessadd the kiosk module+£0.33-0.53

Typical saving where kiosk is gated: £0.80-£1.60 per device per month - within the same benchmark band.

3. Versus building it yourself

A capable Android developer can build a kiosk launcher comparable to the generator’s output in a few weeks. It’s a one-off, organisation-wide cost - and because Bayton’s generators give you the full source for free, you get the ownership, customisation and auditability of an in-house build without paying for it.

ScopeEffortCost
Basic kiosk launcher (limited)~4 weeks~£4,000
Full-featured launcher (grid, folders, branding, admin escape, managed config)6-8 weeks~£6,000-8,000
+ hardening & cross-device testing10-12 weeks~£10,000-12,000
Ongoing maintenance (Android version churn)~2-4 weeks / year~£2,000-4,000 / yr

Based on a typical UK mid-level Android developer salary (~£50,000 / year ≈ ~£960 / week). The true cost to employ is higher, so treat these as a floor.

Total cost avoided, by fleet size

Recurring kiosk-software cost the generators remove over a 3-year deployment, using the three benchmark rates above (£1.20 / £1.60 / £4.00 per device per month), in GBP:

1,000£43,200£57,600£144,000
5,000£216,000£288,000£720,000
